The Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) is the national peak body representing health care professionals in diabetes education, management and care, and also the regulatory body for Credentialed Diabetes Educators (CDEs) Australia-wide. They have a small team of permanent staff and rely on the ongoing support of volunteers to continue transforming lives through quality diabetes education.

About the Opportunity

The Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) now has a newly created opportunity for a Senior Communications and Marketing Officer to join their team on a full-time basis. Whilst ideally based at their head office in Canberra, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

Reporting to the Manager of Policy, Advocacy and Communications, you will be leading the development and implementation of ADEA's external communication strategies, acting as the main point of contact and liaison for all media enquiries. You will also be directly responsible for the Communications and Social Media Officer.

Your key responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Building awareness of ADEA and diabetes education to facilitate membership growth and increase engagement;
  • Overseeing the end-to-end delivery of marketing activities and campaigns, across a variety of channels;
  • Writing and designing creative and engaging promotional materials for ongoing promotion/awareness campaigns and specific events;
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with media outlets, identifying and generating media exposure opportunities;
  • Providing advice across a range of areas, including brand management, stakeholder engagement and appropriate communication channels;
  • Monitoring and responding to new developments or changing priorities within the health sector, to ensure that ADEA members and other stakeholders are updated and kept informed.

About You

ADEA is looking for a highly strategic thinker with a strong background in a broad communications role and demonstrated experience writing media articles or releases. It is essential that you hold or are currently working towards a tertiary qualification in Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field.

Experience in the health industry or connections with health publications/journalists would be advantageous, though not essential provided you are able and willing to learn, comfortable building relationships in this sector, and confident identifying opportunities to set up interviews or articles with relevant media outlets.

Your advanced writing and editing skills will be crucial, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to both create and review content for a range of channels. Able to adjust your approach and tailor communication to each target audience, you'll have a solid understanding of current marketing/communications practices and an awareness of emerging trends.

An effective and influential negotiator, you will be confident building relationships with a diverse range of individuals, from health professionals to community members, media outlets and other key stakeholders. You will have strong communication skills and be able to navigate competing tasks and priorities, collaborating across the ADEA team to ensure deadlines are met and that clients enjoy a consistently high level of service.

Your ability to identify areas for improvement and genuine passion for innovation will help you to drive new communications strategies and initiatives, ultimately improving support for every Australian that is impacted by diabetes.
